Turkish officials to travel to Damascus for working visit

(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Defense Minister Yasar Guler, and intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin are on a working visit to Damascus on Monday, where they will meet with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and other senior officials, according to Turkish Foreign Ministry sources.

The meetings aim to review Türkiye-Syria relations over the past year, covering political, economic, and security aspects, following the first anniversary of the fall of the Bashar Assad regime. Discussions are expected to focus on the progress of the March 10 agreement, which is closely tied to Türkiye’s national security priorities, as well as emerging security threats in southern Syria linked to Israel’s recent actions.

Cooperation on counterterrorism will also be on the agenda, particularly in preventing the resurgence of Daesh (ISIS), given Syria’s accession to the International Coalition to Defeat Daesh (ICDC) and the potential for terrorist groups to exploit local vulnerabilities.

In addition to security issues, the talks will review bilateral projects aimed at Syria’s reconstruction and initiatives to strengthen the Syrian government’s institutional capacity.

Deputy Foreign Minister Nuh Yilmaz, appointed as Türkiye’s ambassador to Damascus, is also traveling with the delegation.

Since the collapse of the Assad regime, Türkiye-Syria relations have strengthened, with opportunities emerging in security and economic cooperation. Reciprocal visits in a 3+3 format—where the three top officials from each side meet—have played a key role in sustaining high-level dialogue. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani visited Türkiye in January, followed by a Turkish delegation visit to Syria in March, and a security-focused meeting in Ankara in October.

The current visit continues this pattern, reflecting a broader effort to support stability in Syria while fostering cooperation aligned with the strategic interests of both countries.
