US issues security alert to citizens in Iran
Iran has been facing widespread unrest since late December, with clashes between protesters and authorities resulting in numerous casualties. The Iranian government has responded by imposing strict measures, including shutting down mobile and internet networks, which it describes as an effort to prevent foreign-instigated violence.
“Leave Iran now,” the US Virtual Embassy Tehran said on Monday. It emphasized that individuals should make independent risk assessments and travel arrangements, noting that “the US government cannot guarantee your safety if you choose to depart.”
The advisory also warned that “US nationals are at significant risk of questioning, arrest, and detention in Iran,” highlighting that merely holding a US passport could lead to detention. Dual citizens were specifically instructed to leave using only their Iranian passports.
For Americans unable to leave, the guidance advises them to “find a secure location within your residence or another safe building” and to store sufficient food, water, medicine, and other essential supplies.
Tensions between Tehran, Washington, and West Jerusalem have persisted since mid-2025, when the US, alongside Israel, carried out attacks on Iranian nuclear sites. Trump argued the intervention was intended to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, claims that Tehran rejects.
Last week, Trump said his administration is exploring “some very strong options,” adding that potential airstrikes are “one of the many options on the table.”
Iranian officials have responded by warning that any US or Israeli military presence would become “legitimate targets” in the event of intervention. They also claim to have evidence of foreign-backed infiltrators, including Mossad operatives, embedded among protesters to create disorder and justify foreign action.
